Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “Colt Single Action Army .45”. The top of the barrel is marked “Colt’s Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co. Hartford, CT. U.S.A.” The left side of the frame is marked “Pat. Sept. 19, 1871 / July 2,72 Jan. 19,75” and with the Rampant Colt logo. The underside of the frame at the grip frame, the left side of the grip frame and the left side of the backstrap are marked “21657SA”. The inside rear face of the loading gate is marked “340”. The left front of the trigger guard is marked with a “VP” in a triangle and at the rear with “P”. The right front of the trigger guard is marked “0”. The front face of the cylinder is marked “6 5 7“ and the rear face is marked with the Rampant Colt logo. The underside of both grip panels is scribed “657”.
Barrel Length: 4 ¾”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a quarter round blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square groove in the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth tusk with gold colored Colt medallions. The grips show a light grain with yellowing at the back of the grips. The grips show one or two very light handling marks and light surface cracking along the grain. There are in about Excellent condition.
Type of Finish: The barrel, cylinder, grip frame and the top and back of the hammer are blued. The frame is case colored.
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is no indication in the bore, cylinder or recoil shield that this revolver was ever fired outside the factory.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 99+% of its metal finish. There is a tiny compression mark on the underside front of the grip frame next to the frame screw. The cylinder does not have a drag line. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions normally. The cylinder lockup is solid on all 6 chambers and the trigger pull is crisp. We did not fire this revolver.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes in its original black cardboard factory box. The box has a label on the left side that correctly identifies the make, model, caliber and barrel length of this revolver. The lid is marked with “COLT” in gold letters and is hinged at the back with a heavy reinforced fabric hinge under the black vinyl covering. The outside of the box shows light handling marks with slight fraying at one of the corners, and several scuff marks on the bottom surface. The inside of the box is green, and the inside of the lid is marked “Colt Single Action Army” and with the Rampant Colt logo. There are wear marks on the front and rear interior surfaces from the edges of the revolver. Overall, the box is in about Fine condition. Included in the box are a warranty card, a pamphlet on “Handling the Handgun” and a schematic/parts list/use/care pamphlet. All are in Excellent condition.
Our Assessment: This is a beautiful early 2nd Generation Colt Single Action Army revolver in Mint condition and appears never to have been fired outside the factory. The tusk grips really set off the dark grip frame, cylinder and barrel. The case coloring is very rich and the bluing is deep – please see our pictures!! If you are a Colt collector, and interested in filling out your collection, you need to take a close look at this revolver.
