Our Assessment:  The Model 1911 pistol, adopted by the U.S. military in 1911 and designed by John Browning, stands as one of the most influential service handguns of the 20th century. This example, built on a 1918 Colt frame with a later Remington Rand slide, reflects the long service life and arsenal maintenance practices common to U.S. military sidearms. During and after both World Wars, it was standard practice for pistols to be rebuilt using available serviceable parts, resulting in mixed-manufacturer configurations such as this one. Chambered in .45 ACP, a cartridge developed alongside the pistol to meet military requirements for stopping power, the platform became synonymous with American service use from World War I through Vietnam and beyond.

This pistol retains approximately 90% of its parkerized finish, which has been applied during a later refinish, showing areas of thinning and light corrosion staining, particularly along the slide and dust cover. The markings remain clear and legible, including the “United States Property” stamp and early ordnance inspection marks on the frame. The bore is bright with well-defined rifling, rating 9/10, with only minor fouling present. The Remington Rand-marked slide and High Standard barrel reflect typical arsenal replacement components, while the checkered plastic grips remain in Very Good condition with light wear but no structural issues. The overall presentation reflects a service pistol that has seen refurbishment while retaining strong mechanical integrity.

The Model 1911’s enduring reputation is built on its robust design, effective chambering, and long-standing role in U.S. military history. Mixed examples such as this one offer insight into the lifecycle of service firearms, where maintenance and reissue often resulted in combinations of parts from different manufacturers. This pistol stands as a representative example of that history, blending World War I production with later service updates while maintaining its functional design and historical character.
