Our Assessment: This is a Marlin Model 1895G Guide Gun lever action rifle made with an 18 1/2” round barrel and three quarter length 6-round magazine tube. This one is marked with the JM proof and was produced in 2008 making it one of the last true Marlin guns before the Remington acquisition. The original Model 1895 rifle ceased production in 1915, and was upgraded and brought back into production in 1972. The barrel is chambered in .45-70 Govt. and has Ballard rifling, which produces tighter groups with lead bullets than Marlin’s Micro-Groove rifling. The rifle is in about Fine Plus-Excellent condition with only a few light marks in its surfaces. The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling and some faint erosion which may prove to be stubborn fouling. This rifle is perfect for elk or black bear hunting and its fast lever action will give you a quick 2nd shot on running game if you need it. The 6-round capacity is about as much as you’ll see from any .45-70 rifle and with improvements in projectiles for the caliber its 18.5″ barrel and ability to mount a scope should make for a rifle which is accurate and heavy-hitting. Please see our photos and good luck!
