Markings: The import mark on the barrel reads “CAI GEORGIA VT” and “M48 YUGO 8MM. The top of the receiver is marked with the Yugoslavian crest and “M48”. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The left side of the receiver is marked with Cyrillic lettering and “44”, for Prezeduce 44, which translates to “Factory 44″. The left side of the buttstock (no letter prefix), bottom of the magazine (no letter prefix) and the top of the bolt handle are marked with the serial number. The bottom of the bolt handle is marked with a production number. Many of the metal parts are marked with small Yugoslavian stampings. The buttstock is marked with faded Yugo inspection stamps.
The base of the bayonet blade is marked with Cyrillic lettering and “44”, for Prezeduce 44. The bayonet crosspiece is marked with a number that does not match the rifle’s serial number.

Barrel Length: Approximately 23 ¼ Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set atop a ramped base. The rear sight is a “V” notched sliding escalator marked from “2-20”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, nose cap with bayonet lug, hole for the included cleaning rod, barrel band with sling bar, through bolt, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows scratches and light surface erosion. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches and compression marks. Several of the marks have damaged or removed small areas of the wood. The LOP measures 13 1/4 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original. The metal has been treated with cold blue.

Bore Condition: The lands are bright, the grooves are light gray and the rifling is deep. There is fouling and light erosion in the grooves.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 93% of its metal finish. The metal has been treated with cold blue. Small scratches show through the cold blue finish. The barrel has oxidation bleeding through the cold blue finish causing discoloration. The metal shows thin scrapes and handling marks. The screw heads show use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
The bayonet mounts the rifle properly.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a leather sling, the correct Model 1948 Bayonet & metal Scabbard, a stripper clip pouch, a metal oiler and a pull through thong & loop.
The sling shows light scrapes & a spew of fats & oils. It is in Fine condition.
The bayonet shows small scrapes & handling marks on the handle. It is in Fine condition. The scabbard shows scrapes, shallow dents and oxidation. It is in Very Good Plus condition.
The leather pouch shows scrapes, creasing and discoloration. The 2 chamber metal oiler shows scrapes & surface erosion. They are in Very Good condition. The thong & loop are in Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This Model 1948 Yugoslavian Mauser was made at “Factory 44” by Zastava almost 70 years ago. Its metal has been treated with cold blue and the wood has been oiled. The rifle looks good and has matching part numbers on the receiver, bottom metal, bolt handle and stock. The rifle comes with the correct Model 1948 bayonet & scabbard, a stripper clip pouch, a metal oiler and a pull through thong & loop.  Good luck
