Markings: There is no visible import mark.The top of the receiver is marked with the Yugoslavian crest and “M48”. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The left side of the receiver is marked with Cyrillic lettering and “44”, for Prezeduce 44, which translates to “Factory 44″. The left side of the buttstock, bottom of the metal and the top of the bolt handle are marked with the serial number. The left side of the buttstock is also marked with the last 4 digits of the serial number in pencil. The bottom of the bolt handle is marked with a production number. Many of the metal parts are marked with small Yugoslavian stampings. The buttstock is marked with faded Yugo inspection stamps.
The base of the bayonet blade is marked with Cyrillic lettering and “44”, for Prezeduce 44. The bayonet crosspiece and scabbard frog stud are each marked “21410”.
Barrel Length: Approximately 23 ¼ Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set atop a ramped base and under a removable protective hood. The rear sight is a “V” notched sliding escalator marked from “2-20”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, nose cap with bayonet lug, hole for the included cleaning rod, barrel band with sling bar, through bolt, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows scrapes, small scratches and light discoloration. The wood shows several scrapes & scratches which have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The lands are bright, the grooves are semi bright and the rifling is deep. There is fouling in the grooves which should clean up some. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The metal shows scrapes, thin scratches and handling marks. The left side of the barrel shows a few small dents. The screw heads show use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
The bayonet mounts the rifle most of the way but will seat fully and lock into place. It is a very tight fit. This is possibly due to excess dried cosmoline.
There is cosmoline on metal & wood and in the action.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with the correct Model 1948 Bayonet, metal Scabbard and leather belt Frog. The bayonet grip shows scrapes & small compression marks. The refinished scabbard has scratches and light surface erosion showing through the finish. It shows scrapes. The bayonet & scabbard are in Very Good Plus condition. The leather belt frog shows scrapes, discoloration and creasing. It is in Good condition. The rifle also comes with a leather sling, dual leather stripper clip pouch, and a pull through weighted cleaning cord. The sling & pouch show scrapes and discoloration. The weighted cord shows soiling. These items are in Very Good condition.
Our Assessment: This Model 1948 Yugoslavian Mauser was made at “Factory 44” by Zastava almost 70 years ago. The rifle has been in storage for a long time so you will have to clean up excess cosmoline before you take it out the range. The rifle looks good and has a strong bright bore. It has nice markings including a deep Yugoslavian crest and has matching part numbers on the receiver, bottom metal, bolt handle and stock. The rifle comes with the correct Model 1948 bayonet, scabbard & belt frog as well as other accessories. Good luck.
