Our Assessment: The Young Repeating Arms Company slide action shotgun is an uncommon early American repeating shotgun produced in Columbus, Ohio between 1902 and 1903. This example reflects the experimental era of pump action shotgun development, incorporating a two shot repeating system with takedown construction and configuration typical of early trap shooting guns. The long 32 inch barrel with serrated full length solid rib and fixed Full choke underscores its intended role as a dedicated trap gun. The barrel carries the correct Columbus, Ohio address marking, while the receiver shows the appropriate patent dates and serial number. The metal retains approximately 80 percent of its finish, with the receiver still displaying strong color case hardening and the barrel showing evidence of partial refinishing where corrosion was addressed. Overall, the shotgun presents in Good to Very Good condition for a firearm of this age.
Chambered for 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge shells, the shotgun maintains the classic trap gun layout with a brass bead front sight at the end of the rib. The bore is bright and shiny with no visible erosion and only light fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10, reflecting excellent internal condition. The design does not incorporate a manual safety, consistent with many dedicated trap guns of the era.
The two piece walnut stock set features checkering, a semi pistol grip, fluted straight comb, schnabel finger grooved forend, and a checkered hard rubber buttplate with a 13 3/4 inch length of pull. The wood shows scratches, compression dents, a noticeable dent on the right front of the comb, and light gapping at the buttstock inletting. Minor chipping is present at the rear of the upper tang and the checkering shows light wear, though no structural cracks are noted. The stock rates in Good to Very Good condition for a C&R firearm of this age. Mechanically, the action functions correctly. This Young Repeating Arms shotgun represents a scarce example from the early years of American pump action trap gun development.
