The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate retains most of its refinished metal finish, has dulled checkering and shows browning from age. The door spring is strong. The handguards show minor handling wear scattered throughout. The forward handguard has some small chips in the lower edges. There are no visible cracks. The replacement stock shows minor handling wear with a notable scratch on the left flank. The stock shows no chips or cracks. Overall the stock is in about Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original and refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There is no erosion in the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 3 and a throat of 2. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The left side of the front of the action at the follower arm pin hole the receiver is cracked. In this writer’s opinion this most likely happened when the barrel was replaced. We recommend not firing this rifle until it has been evaluated by a competent gunsmith. The gas plug, cylinder, and friction surfaces of the bolt show finish loss. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle would be in Good + to Very Good condition if not for the crack in the receiver.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. However there is a crack in the receiver that may cause problems if the rifle is fired. We recommend not firing this rifle until it has been evaluated by a competent gunsmith. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a reproduction bayonet. The bayonet is in Excellent condition.

Our Assessment: The M1 Garand, designed by Canadian-born John C. Garand and manufactured by Springfield Armory, holds an iconic place in American military history. Serving as the standard-issue rifle for the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War, it was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, this gas-operated, rotating bolt rifle gave American troops a distinct advantage in firefights, allowing for a rate of fire that bolt-action rifles simply couldn’t match. The M1 Garand’s design was revolutionary for its time, with an internal magazine fed by an eight-round “en bloc” clip. The rifle automatically ejected the clip with a distinctive “ping” sound when empty, signaling the need for a reload. This sound became iconic, a signature auditory clue of the weapon’s presence on the battlefield. While the fixed magazine and clip system did present some limitations, they were largely outweighed by the rifle’s advantages in speed and firepower. Today, the M1 Garand is a coveted piece for collectors, competitive shooters, and history enthusiasts alike. It is often seen in vintage military shooting competitions and has become a popular choice for hunters who appreciate its historical significance. With its blend of innovative design, rugged reliability, and proven effectiveness, the M1 Garand is more than just a relic of the past; it’s a symbol of American ingenuity and the bravery of those who carried it into battle.
