Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand with a 1944 receiver reflects the U.S. military’s robust firearm production during World War II. Springfield Armory, the primary manufacturer of the M1 Garand, produced millions of these semi-automatic rifles, which were a mainstay of American infantry during the war. A receiver from 1944 places this rifle’s origins in the heart of wartime production, likely intended for use in the European or Pacific Theaters. The rifle was later sold as a CMP Rack Grade Rifle in 2022.
To restore functionality and enhance its accuracy, the rifle’s original barrel was replaced with a Criterion barrel. Criterion barrels are known for their high-quality craftsmanship and are a popular choice for Garand restorations, offering modern precision while maintaining compatibility with the rifle’s original design. Additionally, the installation of a barrel block scope mount transforms this rifle into an M1D clone. The M1D configuration, developed during and after World War II, featured a scope mounted to the side of the barrel, designed for use by designated marksmen. While this rifle is not an original M1D, the modifications closely replicate its appearance and functionality.
In conclusion this rifle represents a fascinating mix of history and modern customization. As a CMP Rack Grade rifle, it has a legacy of military service. M1D clones are popular among collectors and enthusiasts for their historical significance and practical shooting capability. While not an original sniper rifle, this Springfield M1 Garand serves as a tribute to the original M1D design, blending wartime heritage with modern craftsmanship in a package that is meant to be shot, not simply boxed up and admired.
