The LOP measures 13.25” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. This CMP replacement stock and handguards show some light scattered surface wear from handling and storage with two very light lines on the comb near the butt. There are no visible chips or cracks. Overall the wood is in Excellent condition. The buttplate similarly has almost no wear and is in excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Refinished
Bore Condition: The bore is semi-dulled with well defined rifling, and mild visible erosion throughout the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 2.5 and a throat of 4. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains 96% of its metal finish. The receiver, gas cylinder, cylinder lock, and plug have been refinished. The rest of the parts appear to be in original condition. The barrel shows the majority of the finish loss. The bolt shows rub wear on the friction surfaces. The trigger group has turned a brown/green from age. The recesses of the rifle are dusty but this should be easy to remove with a proper cleaning. The receiver shows mild pitting under the refinish. The edges of the op-rod show finish loss. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. There is surface rust in the recesses of the elevation knob. Overall this rifle is in about Good + to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes the CMP certificate of authenticity, manual, and the CMP black hard case with foam.
Our Assessment: The Springfield Armory M1 Garand is one of the most iconic military rifles in history, serving as the standard-issue service rifle for U.S. forces during World War II and the Korean War. This particular example was manufactured in October 1942, a time when the U.S. was ramping up wartime production to equip troops for major operations in both the Pacific and European theaters. The barrel is dated July 1942, meaning it was produced shortly before the receiver, which is not uncommon as components were stockpiled and assembled in batches. Springfield Armory was the primary producer of the M1 Garand, manufacturing millions of rifles from the late 1930s through the 1950s. The Garand’s .30-06 chambering, semi-automatic gas-operated action, and 8-round en bloc clip made it revolutionary at the time, providing American troops with a significant advantage over the bolt-action rifles used by enemy forces.
This rifle was sold by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) in 2022 as a Field Grade rifle. The new production CMP stock set ensures the rifle is solid and serviceable, though it lacks the wear and character of an original wartime stock. Field Grade rifles are typically in functional condition but show signs of use, as they often saw extensive service before being refurbished and released to the civilian market. While not entirely in its original wartime configuration, this Garand remains a significant piece of history, allowing enthusiasts to own and shoot a rifle that played a crucial role in securing victory for the Allies during World War II.
