Stock Configuration & Condition:  The wood stock has a traditional Semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal butt plate with storage compartment.  The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The stock shows compressions, lines and scrapes, and patches of discoloration scattered throughout the surface of the wood. The stock shows no visible cracks. The forward handguard is cracked in two places.  There are the usual small chips around the trigger group. The toe of the stock shows a notable chip and as a result the butt plate sits over the toe. The butt plate has been refinished and shows surface oxidation near the door. The door functions and stays shut when closed. The rear handguard section has been replaced at some point. Overall the stock set is in Poor condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is gray with defined rifling. There is moderate erosion/pitting scattered throughout the bore. The muzzle reads at a 3+ and the throat reads at 5+. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 5/10. It should also be stated that There is a known issue with Blue Sky imported guns in that sometimes they stamped the import mark so deep it took the barrel out of round. Before firing this rifle please have it evaluated by a competent gunsmith.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The surface shows scattered lines and nicks throughout. The bolt and receiver show rub wear on the friction surfaces. The inside of the action has surface rust and rust freckling scattered throughout both the receiver and trigger group. The markings are mostly clear and the screw heads are sharp. The rear sight does not function correctly as the elevation adjustment will not travel through its full range. Overall this rifle is in Poor to Fair condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly although it is very rough from the surface rust. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning will be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The M1 Garand, designed by Canadian-born John C. Garand and manufactured by Springfield Armory, holds an iconic place in American military history. Serving as the standard-issue rifle for the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War, it was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, this gas-operated, rotating bolt rifle gave American troops a distinct advantage in firefights, allowing for a rate of fire that bolt-action rifles simply couldn’t match. The M1 Garand’s design was revolutionary for its time, with an internal magazine fed by an eight-round “en bloc” clip. The rifle automatically ejected the clip with a distinctive “ping” sound when empty, signaling the need for a reload. This sound became iconic, a signature auditory clue of the weapon’s presence on the battlefield. While the fixed magazine and clip system did present some limitations, they were largely outweighed by the rifle’s advantages in speed and firepower. Today, the M1 Garand is a coveted piece for collectors, competitive shooters, and history enthusiasts alike. It is often seen in vintage military shooting competitions and has become a popular choice for hunters who appreciate its historical significance. With its blend of innovative design, rugged reliability, and proven effectiveness, the M1 Garand is more than just a relic of the past; it’s a symbol of American ingenuity and the bravery of those who carried it into battle.

This example began its life in January of 1945 and still retains its original SA 1-45 marked Springfield Barrel. This example was also refinished and had several components replaced, possibly by an Arsenal or the importer BLUE SKY however, the possible Arsenal rebuild marks are illegible.
