Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand, manufactured in November 1943, is a wartime production rifle that likely saw service and refurbishment during or after World War II. The receiver is a mid-war example, made by Springfield Armory, which was the primary producer of M1 Garands during the war. The barrel on this rifle is dated 1966, indicating it was rebarreled during a post-war rebuild, likely at a military arsenal. Its import mark from Arlington Ordnance suggests it was brought back into the U.S. after overseas service, possibly from allied use or military surplus programs.

The M1 Garand was the first standard-issue semi-automatic rifle adopted by a major power, giving American troops a distinct advantage in rate of fire during WWII. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield and fed by an 8-round en bloc clip, it proved accurate, rugged, and reliable. General George S. Patton famously called the M1 Garand “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” and its success in the field lived up to that reputation. Even today, the Garand holds a revered place in American military history, and rifles like this one, with both WWII and Cold War components, tell the story of decades of service and evolution.
