Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a traditional Semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal buttplate with storage compartment. The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The wood on this rifle has been sanded and refinished. The wood shows compressions and minor surface level lines scattered throughout. The right flank of the butt shows two wood repairs. The was a chip that has been sanded down on the left upper edge of the stock near the receiver. There are no visible cracks in the wood. The butt plate has been refinished and shows previous wear and signs of use under the refinish. The door functions correctly and has a strong spring. Overall the stock set is in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Refinished.
Bore Condition: The bore is very bright with well defined rifling. There is no visible erosion or notable pitting. Our gauges show a muzzle of 0.5 and a throat of 1. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.25/10. This is outstanding for a 1945 barrel.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 97% of its refinished metal finish. There is some minor finish loss on the cylinder lock, the trigger guard, and on the friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver. The barrel and the receiver show some minor scattered handling marks. The markings are mostly clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a green canvas sling.
Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand, manufactured in May of 1945, comes from the final months of World War II and is paired with an April 1945 dated Springfield barrel, making it a period-correct combination. Imported by Arlington Arms, this rifle shows excellent mechanical condition with a muzzle reading of 0.5 and throat erosion of 1, indicating minimal wear and a bright bore with strong rifling and no visible erosion. While the stock has been sanded and refinished the rifle remains a solid representation of late-war U.S. military production.
The M1 Garand, designed by John Garand, was adopted as the standard U.S. service rifle in 1936 and remained in frontline use through the Korean War. Its semi-automatic operation gave American troops a distinct advantage in firepower, especially when compared to the bolt-action rifles used by many Axis powers. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, it used an 8-round en-bloc clip, allowing for fast and reliable reloading. General George S. Patton famously praised the M1 as “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” highlighting its impact on the battlefield. Rifles from the spring of 1945 are particularly desirable to collectors, as they mark the conclusion of wartime production and reflect the culmination of years of refinement in Garand manufacturing.
