Our Assessment: This Saginaw S’G’ M1 Carbine dates to early production between April and July of 1943, representing the first and most sought-after phase of Saginaw’s wartime output. It is fitted with an Underwood barrel dated 6-43, a correct pairing for this narrow production window and a strong indicator of an early-war configuration. The trigger housing is marked “INLAND” and carries the “ZW / 95” marking, signifying final finishing and inspection by the Zehnder Company, a Swiss subcontractor used during the intense early-production period when prime contractors relied heavily on outside firms to meet demand.
The stock is stamped “RMC” with an Ordnance wheel, indicating production by Rock-Ola Music Co., a well-known prime contractor whose stocks are especially desirable. The presence of a later Rock-Ola mark suggests the rifle continued in service and was updated or inspected during its military life, rather than remaining static. Altogether, this carbine reflects the realities of early WWII production, rapid assembly, extensive subcontracting, and later maintenance, making it an excellent example of a legitimate, service-used early Saginaw S’G’ M1 Carbine with strong historical character.
