Our Assessment: Mauser-produced P38 pistols marked “byf 43” represent the height of Germany’s wartime shift toward efficient, reliable sidearms during the Second World War. Adopted in 1938 to replace the Luger, the P38 embodied a more modern design philosophy—double-action operation, simplified machining, and a durable open-top slide—better suited to mass production under the pressures of 1943. Pistols from this period saw wide service across every front, carried by Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe personnel as Germany’s industrial output strained to meet the demands of total war.

Chambered in 9mm Luger, a cartridge with roots at the turn of the 20th century that had long since become the standard German military round, the P38 offered dependable performance in a package engineered for rugged field conditions. This Mauser example retains matching serialized parts and the clean mechanical profile expected of a mid-war service pistol, presenting the purposeful lines and characteristic finish associated with Germany’s principal military sidearm of the era.
