Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well-defined. There is faint erosion. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 87% of its metal finish. The barrel shows holster wear at the muzzle that resolves to light finish loss. The bluing shows mild thinning at the edges, muzzle, and high contact areas, with general handling marks and a light patina in some protected areas. The revolver presents very well and retains a strong military appearance. Screws show light tool marks with strong slots, and markings are fairly clear. Overall, this revolver rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The double action is smooth and the single action is light and crisp. The cylinder locks up with no play at each stop with the trigger depressed. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: Intended for wide adoption by the Austrian-Hungarian army in the period before World War I, the Rast & Gasser 1898 ultimately made its way only to NCO’s and gunners as a secondary weapon due to slower-than-desirable production at the time. It did see use through World War II, however. This particular example, with a clear 1916 acceptance mark, is a desirable piece for collectors interested in World War I history or Austro-Hungarian military arms. Its matching numbers, intact markings, and very good original condition enhance its collectible value significantly. As both a historical artifact and a functional firearm, this Rast & Gasser M1898 is an attractive addition for collectors of military revolvers, especially those seeking a representative piece from the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s World War I arsenal. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
