Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked -“WINCHESTER / PROOF STEEL“-,“MODEL 42, -“WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-“-, “.410 – 3 IN.-” and “MOD.” The right side of the barrel is marked “MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN, CONN.- PATENTS PENDING”. The top of the barrel at the rear and top of the receiver at the front are each marked with the “WP” proof mark. The bottom of the magazine tube and the bottom of the receiver extension are marked with opposing arrow indexing marks. The receiver extension and bottom of the receiver are marked with the serial number.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a metal bead set on the barrel at the muzzle. The top of the receiver has a sighting plane which is serrated for glare reduction.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with grooved forend, flat-bottom pistol grip, straight comb, and checkered black hard rubber Winchester buttplate that is missing its bottom mounting screw. The stocks have some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches with thinning finish in some handling areas. There is a patch of more notable wear in the belly on the right side and thining finish at the rear edge of the stock. There is a chip loss in the top-right of the wrist. There are no cracks. The LOP measures 13 7/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has some scattered light wear with well defined checkering and lettering. The bottom mounting screw for the buttplate is mising. Overall, the stock is in Fair-Good condition and the replacement of the missing screw would yield Good.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore. There is a nick on the muzzle, but it does not appear that it will affect firing.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 85% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. Most of the balance is in operational wear and scattered minor surface oxidation. There are some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in Good-Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage Winchester Model 42 .410 bore pump action shotgun manufactured in 1936. The Model 42 was the first pump shotgun specifically designed for the .410 chambering and resembles its larger cousin, the Model 12. It has a 26? Modified Bore barrel chambered for 3″ shells and without any rib. This would make it the Winchester Catalog No. G4202S, a model which was discontinued in 1963. The gun is in Good-Very Good condition, showing honest wear consistent with use and some damage to the stock, retaining a great bore and strong mechanics.
