Our Assessment: This 1942 Winchester Model 70 Standard Rifle in .30-06 Springfield is a highly collectible and well-preserved example of one of America’s most iconic sporting rifles, manufactured just before Winchester shifted to wartime production during WWII. With its controlled-round-feed action, robust design, and hand-finished craftsmanship, the pre-64 Model 70 earned its title as “The Rifleman’s Rifle.” Chambered in the .30-06—a cartridge synonymous with American military and hunting history—this rifle is ready for everything from mule deer to elk and more.

This example retains about 93% of its original blued finish and shows signs of honest use, including thinning on the leading edges and wear near the muzzle. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, showing only minor erosion near the crown and rating an 8/10. The serial-matching bolt confirms its originality, and the walnut stock is solid with clean checkering and only scattered handling marks, consistent with a rifle of this vintage. The rifle is fitted with a period-correct M.L. Stith side-mount and a Weaver K2.5 scope—an arrangement favored by sportsmen of the era, allowing for optics without permanently modifying the receiver. If you’re looking for a historically significant pre-war Model 70 in a legendary caliber with tasteful period upgrades, this rifle delivers both performance and provenance in equal measure.
