Our Assessment: The Winchester Repeating Arms Model 9422M XTR stands as one of the finest rimfire lever action rifles of the postwar era, built during a period when Winchester’s New Haven plant was still producing smallbore rifles to an exceptionally high standard. Introduced as the magnum counterpart to the .22 LR 9422, the 9422M offered shooters and hunters the added reach and authority of the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire in a platform that mirrored the handling and balance of Winchester’s classic centerfire lever guns. The XTR trim added upgraded wood and finish, placing these rifles a step above standard production and making them especially desirable today.
This 1980-manufactured example presents as a well-kept rifle that has clearly seen responsible use rather than hard field abuse. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, earning a 10/10 rating. The blued finish remains deep and dark across the barrel, receiver, and lever, with only light scratches and handling marks consistent with careful ownership. The factory iron sights remain intact, and the receiver-mounted Redfield 2-7x scope is period-appropriate, with clear glass but cosmetic wear and a fine crosshair reticle that is somewhat faint by modern standards. The checkered walnut stocks retain good definition and fit tightly to the action, though there is a short hairline crack at the top tang that should be noted for transparency.
As a complete package, this rifle captures the appeal that has made the 9422M XTR one of the most sought-after rimfire lever actions on the secondary market. It offers classic Winchester styling, excellent mechanical integrity, and strong collector interest while remaining a practical and accurate small-game rifle. Examples like this continue to appreciate as fewer clean New Haven–produced 9422M rifles remain in circulation.
