Our Assessment:
In 1978, Winchester paid homage to its own legend with the “Matched Set of One Thousand,” a collector’s re-imagining of the 19th-century “One of One Thousand” rifles that cemented the brand’s mystique in the Old West. Built on the Model 94 platform, each rifle combined a 24-inch barrel with exhibition-grade walnut, rich bluing, and gold-tone engraved receiver scenes of North American game.
The .30-30 Winchester cartridge, introduced in 1895, was the first small-bore smokeless powder sporting round and has remained synonymous with the Model 94 for over a century. Its reputation as the classic American deer cartridge is reflected in this rifle’s engraved woodland imagery.
Rifle number MC177 from the limited issue of 1,000 remains a pristine example of Winchester’s artistry at the close of New Haven production. With its unfired condition, full packaging, and exquisite presentation finish, this commemorative stands as both an investment-grade collectible and a striking tribute to the lever gun that defined American hunting culture.
