Our Assessment: Winchester’s commemorative Model 94 series of the 1960s and 1970s reflected the cultural fascination with the American West, and the Cheyenne Carbine produced in 1977, remains one of the more visually striking examples. Built on the classic Winchester 94 action introduced in 1894, this edition pairs the proven lever-action mechanism with gold-toned furniture, engraved panels depicting mounted hunters and buffalo, and a medallion honoring Cheyenne heritage. It carries all the hallmarks of Winchester’s commemorative craftsmanship of the era, and this example shows that artistic intent well, with strong bluing, clear engraving, and walnut stocks that retain attractive grain and tight fit. Light surface wear and scattered scratches on both wood and metal reflect respectful handling over the years rather than hard use.
Chambered in .44-40 Winchester, a cartridge introduced in 1873 alongside the Winchester Model 1873, this rifle connects directly to the frontier period the commemorative theme celebrates. Known for its manageable recoil and effectiveness on small to medium game, the .44-40 became one of the most widespread American cartridges of the late 19th century, bridging revolvers and rifles in a single chambering. Here, the cartridge pairs with a 20-inch carbine barrel, a bright bore with defined rifling, and both buckhorn and tang-mounted aperture sights, creating a package that is equal parts functional lever gun and collectible Western tribute. With its box included and its distinct aesthetic preserved, this Cheyenne Carbine presents as an appealing commemorative Winchester with strong visual presence and period charm.
