Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Super Grade has long been regarded as one of America’s premier sporting bolt-action rifles, combining reliability with refined fit and finish. By 1980, the Super Grade designation still signified upgraded wood, classic styling, and a level of craftsmanship that appealed to serious sportsmen. Built on the proven Model 70 action with a hinged floorplate and internal magazine, rifles of this era continued Winchester’s legacy as a benchmark for precision and durability in the field.
Chambered in the powerful and uncommon .411 KDF Magnum, this rifle reflects the period interest in hard-hitting magnum cartridges developed for large and dangerous game. The .411 KDF was designed to deliver substantial bullet weight and deep penetration, and it pairs naturally with the strong Model 70 action. The 22-inch barrel, fitted with a muzzle brake, balances authority with manageability, while the iron sights and Leupold Vari-X III 1.5–5X scope provide a versatile sighting system well suited to both close and intermediate-range use.
This example retains approximately 95 percent of its original blued finish, with only minor wear visible on the barrel and light corrosion near the end of the forend. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and some fouling present, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The Super Grade walnut stock shows honest use, including scattered dings and scratches, a dent in the right-side forend checkering, and a professionally repaired crack forward of the bolt handle, with the stock fitting tightly to the action. The bolt shows light wear to the jeweling, markings remain crisp, and screw heads are sharp. Accompanied by its Leupold scope, leather sling, and approximately forty rounds of brass, this Model 70 Super Grade represents a distinctive and capable example of Winchester’s classic big-game bolt-action rifle lineage.
