Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered wood with capped pistol-grip, fluted straight comb with cheek-piece, and an orange rubber buttpad. There are sling studs installed on the belly of the buttstock and the underside of the forend. The wood has just a few minor blemishes but the most notable is compression on the upper left edge of the forend. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad. The pad has light wear at the heel and toe and minor discoloration along the outer edge. The rubber is slightly dry. Overall, the stock rates in Fine-plus condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are very minor handling marks, and the action has minor operational wear, but otherwise this rifle is free of any additional notable wear or damage. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine-to-Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear of the bolt. Pushed to the front, the safety is OFF. If pulled to the rear all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade rifle chambered in .338 Winchester and was manufactured in 1969. The post-64 Super Grade has nicer-grain wood and features the classic cut checkering rather than the less expensive to produce press-checkering. The rifle is in Fine-to-Excellent condition with scant evidence of use. The bluing is rich, the bore is bright, and the action is smooth. The .338 Winchester cartridge came into popularity when hunters were interested in heavier bullet weights and is an ideal cartridge for larger game such as elk and moose. There are differing opinions on the quality and merit of post-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifles, but rest assured this Super Grade version has all the virtue of its predecessors. Good luck and happy bidding!
