Barrel Length: 24” standard, 25 1/2” with muzzle brake.

Sights/Optics: There is no provision for iron sights on this rifle. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled with Leupold style bases (no opticis included).

Stock Configuration and Condition: The one-piece checkered wood has a capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb with cheek-piece, and an orange rubber Winchester buttpad. There are sling studs on the belly of the buttstock and the underside of the barrel. There are just a few marks on the stock: a minor drag line on the upper left edge of the foredn, a small compression on the left side of the grip, a minor scrape on the right side of the buttstock, and a few minor nicks on the belly. The checkering is well-defined. Length-of-pull measures 13 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad. The pad is a bit dry, and light discoloration/staining can be seen throughout. Overall, the stock rates in Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is well-defined. There is no erosion, but light stubborn fouling can be seen throughout, and most especially nearer to the muzzle.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The action has a bit of minor operational wear, the receiver has a few minor nicks on the left side of the chamber ring, the barrel has intermittent minor nicks, the most notable of which is on the left side just to the rear of the markings, and the muzzle brake as begun a shift to a light patina. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a three-position safety on the right-rear of the control-feed bolt. Pushed forward, the safety is OFF; pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger; pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: On offer here is a Winchester Model 70 rifle made in the mid-to-late 80s, well after Winchester’s reorganization and revisions to the Model 70 design. It has a 24” barrel with a VAIS muzzle brake, and is chambered for .300 Winchester Magnum, a cartridge ideal for larger game such as bighorn sheep or elk. Much hay has been made about the quality of 70s-era Model 70 rifles, and while major changes did result in consumer dissatisfaction, Winchester did bring back many of the key features that made pre-64 rifles so noteworthy as the company moved into the 80s. This “Super Grade” has the vaunted control-feed bolt and nicer checkering. The rifle is in Fine condition with virtually wear, a decent bore that will improve with the application of some elbow grease, and strong mechanics. Good luck and happy bidding!
