Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered with pistol grip, fluted Monte Carlo comb with cheek piece, and an orange rubber buttpad. There are sling studs on the belly of the buttstock and on the barrel ring. There are only a few notable marks including a few nicks and a larger compression on the comb. The checkering is well-defined, almost sharp. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad is lightly stained throughout, more notable wear on the heel and toe, and is on drier side. Overall, the stock rates is in Fine condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original to the Parts
Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is well-defined. There is no erosion, but light stubborn fouling persists throughout.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The barrel has several larger scuffs/draglines and some more moderate scuff wear at the muzzle—the metal is not disrupted, however. The action has minor operational wear. Screws are sharp. Markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine-plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a three-position safety on the right-rear of the control feed bolt. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 70 is the Super Express variant, which was chambers in several very powerful cartridges such as .375 H&H, .416 Rem Mag, and .458 Winchester, as is the case with this rifle. Interestingly, this rifle has been re-barreled but remains chambered in .458 Winchester. Made in the mid-90s when Winchester found a way to capitalize on no longer being cheap, this Super Express has a control feed bolt, and cut checkering, and really, just the overall higher quality of pre-64 examples. The rifle is in Fine-plus condition with very little wear, and while the bore needs some TLC, this is an impressive rifle perfect for the big game hunter. Good luck and happy bidding!
