Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Safari Express continues the legacy of the pre-64 controlled-round-feed Model 70, a design long trusted by professional guides and dangerous-game hunters across Africa and North America. Built for reliability above all else, the Safari Express incorporates the massive Mauser-style claw extractor, a fixed-blade ejector, and the robust three-position wing safety that have made the Model 70 a benchmark among bolt-action rifles for nearly a century. This example retains the traditional express-rifle sighting system, with a hooded front bead and an adjustable rear U-notch, giving the rifle the fast sight acquisition and durability necessary for large and potentially dangerous game. The grade-1 walnut stock with cheekpiece and factory cross bolts provides both strength and classic express styling.

Chambered in .416 Remington Magnum, this rifle represents one of the most effective modern dangerous-game cartridges introduced in the late 20th century. Designed to replicate .416 Rigby performance in a standard-length action, the .416 Remington Magnum delivers deep penetration, reliable expansion, and heavy bullet weight—balancing power, manageable recoil, and broad international acceptance. In this rifle, the 24-inch barrel and controlled-round-feed action complement the cartridge’s capabilities, and the bore remains in exceptional condition, rating 9.5/10 for sharp rifling and minimal copper fouling. The mechanics operate smoothly, with a crisp trigger and fully functional safety, reflecting a rifle that has seen careful handling rather than hard field use.

Cosmetically, the rifle shows only faint evidence of storage or handling and retains about 98% of its factory matte blue finish. The walnut stock remains crisp with sharp checkering and only light marks, and the tight stock-to-metal fit reinforces the rifle’s overall sense of solidity and refinement. With its combination of modern manufacturing, proven Model 70 design, and the formidable .416 Remington Magnum chambering, this Safari Express stands as an appealing example of a contemporary dangerous-game rifle built to traditional, field-reliable standards.
