Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 70 Safari Express chambered in .375 H&H Magnum is a modern continuation of one of the most storied dangerous-game rifle lineages ever produced. Built in 2018 with a ZP date code and manufactured in Portugal by Browning Viana for Winchester, this rifle preserves the classic Safari Express configuration that has long defined the Model 70’s reputation in African and international big-game hunting. The controlled round feed action, robust internal box magazine, and traditional express-style sighting system place this rifle squarely within the historical framework that made the Model 70 synonymous with reliability under harsh field conditions, a reputation closely associated with Winchester Repeating Arms.
The 24 inch barrel is chambered for the venerable .375 H&H Magnum, a cartridge celebrated for its balance of penetration, controllability, and versatility across a wide range of large and dangerous game. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion present, and this rifle does not appear to have been fired beyond factory test firing, earning a 10 out of 10 bore rating. Approximately 99 percent or more of the original matte blued finish remains, with deep, even coloration throughout. The bolt jeweling is vivid, screw heads are sharp, and all markings are crisp and legible, supporting an overall Excellent condition assessment.
The one-piece Grade 1 walnut stock features a semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb with a pronounced cheekpiece, and a black rubber buttpad, along with sling rings front and rear in classic safari style. The checkering is cleanly cut, the satin finish remains strong, and there are no chips, cracks, or looseness noted, with the stock fitting the barreled action tightly and evenly. Sighting equipment consists of a hooded beaded front sight and an adjustable U-notch rear sight mounted on ramped bases, with the receiver drilled and tapped for optics. Mechanically, the action functions correctly with a crisp trigger and properly operating three-position safety, presenting this rifle as a near-new example of Winchester’s modern Safari Express, combining traditional dangerous-game design with contemporary manufacturing quality.
