Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 70 Palma Match rifle represents a focused expression of American target rifle development during the 1970s, produced to commemorate the centennial of international Palma competition. Built during the New Haven era and marked “Palma Match 1876–1976,” this rifle reflects Winchester’s intent to showcase the Model 70 platform as a serious long-range competition tool rather than a sporting arm. The heavy 26 inch barrel, Palma markings, and competition sight bases place it squarely within the lineage of precision rifles developed for disciplined, iron-sight long-range shooting, drawing on the Model 70’s longstanding reputation for strength, consistency, and controlled-round feed reliability from Winchester Repeating Arms.

Chambered in .308 Winchester, the rifle aligns with the cartridge’s dominance in postwar match shooting, prized for its predictable ballistics, manageable recoil, and accuracy potential at extended distances. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9 out of 10, which is consistent with a rifle that has seen measured use rather than sustained competition wear. Retaining approximately 95 percent of its original blued finish, the metal surfaces show only minor scuffs and handling marks, with sharp screw slots and clear markings reinforcing the impression of careful ownership and preservation.

The one-piece walnut Palma stock is properly bedded and configured with a pistol grip, straight comb, and factory Winchester rubber recoil pad, emphasizing positional stability and recoil control during prone or sling-supported shooting. While the stock shows scattered scratches, compression dents, and handling wear consistent with a match rifle that has been used as intended, it remains solid and visually appealing, rating Very Good overall. Mechanically, the action functions correctly with the Model 70’s three-position bolt safety operating as designed, reinforcing the rifle’s reputation for thoughtful engineering and competition-grade execution during this period of Winchester production.
