The LOP measures 14″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows minor wear, with only a couple of handling marks and dings throughout. The checkering is well defined with sharp peaks. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Fine to Excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Stainless
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light scratches throughout the barrel and floorplate, and some wear on the top of the receiver from where previous scope mounts have been. Otherwise, the stainless finish is intact throughout. The jeweling on the bolt is bright and vivid. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless embodies the best features of the post-1992 “Classic” reintroduction, most importantly, the return of the controlled-round-feed (CRF) action with its massive Mauser-style claw extractor. Paired with stainless steel construction, a 26-inch barrel, and chambering in 7mm Remington Magnum, this rifle is built for durability, long-range performance, and confidence in harsh field conditions. Manufactured in New Haven during one of Winchester’s most respected modern production periods, this rifle reflects excellent machining, clean lines, and the refined handling for which the Model 70 is known.
The 7mm Remington Magnum, introduced in 1962, remains one of the most popular and effective long-range hunting cartridges in North America. Known for its flat trajectory, manageable recoil, and outstanding downrange performance, it excels in open-country environments where shots may stretch well beyond typical woods distances. The bright, sharp bore in this rifle reinforces that it retains full ballistic potential, while the 26-inch barrel maximizes velocity and energy, key advantages of the cartridge.
Cosmetically, the rifle is in very strong condition with roughly 98 percent of its stainless finish intact. Light scratches and scope-mount impressions are the only notable marks. The synthetic stock is tight, solid, and clean, with well-defined checkering and no structural issues. Mechanically, the rifle functions correctly with bright bolt jeweling, crisp safety operation, and the smooth cycling expected from a tuned CRF action.
With its desirable chambering, rugged stainless construction, excellent bore, and classic Winchester CRF action, this Model 70 Classic Stainless is equally suited for elk in the Rockies, mule deer on the prairie, or long-range steel on the range.
