Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless represents the continuation of one of America’s most respected bolt-action lineages. Built in New Haven during the 1994 to 2005 era, this rifle retains the controlled round feed system that defined the pre-64 Model 70 and restored its reputation among serious hunters. The stainless steel construction and 26 inch barrel reflect a purposeful, all-weather configuration designed for demanding field conditions. Marked “CLASSIC STAINLESS” and bearing the Winchester proof, this example embodies the late New Haven production period that many enthusiasts regard as a high point for modern Model 70 rifles.
Chambered in .338 Winchester Magnum, a cartridge introduced in 1958 specifically for heavy North American and African game, this rifle is built for substantial power and extended effective range. The 26 inch barrel maximizes velocity potential from the .338 Win. Mag. case, enhancing performance with heavier bullet weights typically used for elk, moose, and large bear. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, showing only minor copper fouling, and rates 9 out of 10. The rifle retains approximately 98 percent of its original stainless finish with only light scuffs and handling marks. The one-piece checkered synthetic stock features a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, black rubber buttpad, and sling studs, with a 14 inch length of pull. The stock rates in Excellent condition.
Mechanically, the bolt action operates correctly and the safety functions as intended. The receiver is drilled and tapped and fitted with a Redfield one-piece base, ready for optic installation. With its stainless construction, controlled round feed action, and magnum chambering, this Model 70 Classic Stainless represents a robust and refined example of a modern American hunting rifle built on a time-proven action design.
