Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter in .300 Remington Ultra Magnum matches one of the most trusted bolt-action designs ever made with one of the most powerful commercial long-range hunting cartridges of the modern era. Built during the final New Haven years, this rifle features the controlled-round-feed (CRF) claw extractor, forged receiver, and smooth cycling that defined the Classic series, attributes highly valued by hunters pursuing large, tough game in challenging environments.
Introduced in 1999, the .300 Remington Ultra Magnum pushed .30-caliber cartridge performance into true magnum territory without the need for a belt, delivering exceptionally flat trajectories and tremendous retained energy at distance. In a 26-inch barrel like the one found here, the RUM reaches its full potential, making this rifle suitable for elk, moose, large mule deer, and open-country hunting where shots can stretch far beyond typical ranges. The bore condition in this example is outstanding; bright, sharp, and erosion-free, confirming that it remains fully capable of precision magnum performance.
The walnut stock is elegant and classic, with crisp checkering, strong finish, tight inletting, and only minimal handling marks. Metal condition is equally impressive, retaining approximately 98 percent of its original deep blue with only a few minute marks behind the bolt shroud. The bolt jeweling remains vivid, and all mechanical functions- safety, cycling, and lockup, perform correctly.
With its excellent condition, premium materials, desirable CRF action, and powerful .300 RUM chambering, this Model 70 Classic Sporter represents a top-tier hunting rifle ready for serious field use or inclusion in a refined sporting rifle collection.
