Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Alaskan chambered in .338 Winchester Magnum is a powerful and iconic variant of the pre-64 Model 70 line, purpose-built for North American big game hunting in rugged terrain. Introduced in 1955, the Alaskan configuration featured a 25” barrel for optimal velocity, a Monte Carlo comb with cheekpiece for better scope use, and was commonly chambered in hard-hitting cartridges like the .338 Win. Mag. This 1957 example checks all the boxes—classic checkered walnut stock with dark wood forend tip, capped pistol grip, and the controlled round feed action that made pre-64 Model 70s the “Rifleman’s Rifle.” The included Weaver K4 scope adds vintage appeal and functionality for those seeking an authentic mid-century hunting rig.
With about 97% of its original blue finish remaining, a bright bore, and a stock that shows only light handling marks, this rifle has clearly been well cared for. The .338 Win. Mag. chambering makes it ideal for everything from elk and moose to bear, and it remains a favorite among serious hunters and collectors alike. Whether you’re assembling a pre-64 Winchester collection or need a practical, proven rifle for harsh environments, this Model 70 Alaskan represents the perfect blend of form, function, and history.
