Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 has long been a staple among American sportsmen, a great example of Winchester’s design and craftsmanship, well deserving of its moniker “The Rifleman’s Rifle”. This example was made in 1965 and is chambered for the .225 Winchester cartridge. This is a less common chambering, only produced from 1964-1971. Designed to be a replacement for the barrel-burning .220 Swift, the new cartridge was fast, accurate, and gentler on bores than the Swift. The standardization of the .22-250 cartridge by Remington proved to be too much competition for the .225 Winchester. The .22-250 had been a popular wildcat, and becoming a standard cartridge only increased its popularity, leading to the .225 being discontinued. Whether you’re looking to round out a Winchester collection or just appreciate a fine cartridge, this Model 70 in .225 Winchester is in great shape and should be a great shooter or addition to your collection.
