Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 64 dates to 1951 and reflects the mature postwar expression of Winchester’s refined sporting lever rifle built on the Model 1894 action. Introduced as an upscale alternative to the standard Model 94, the Model 64 featured improved stock geometry and handling characteristics aimed at the serious hunter. The semi beavertail forend, capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and steel shotgun style buttplate give this rifle a distinctly mid twentieth century sporting profile while retaining the proven top ejecting Winchester lever action.
Chambered in .32 Winchester Special, this rifle represents a cartridge introduced in 1901 to appeal to hunters who favored a slightly heavier bullet and wider bore than the .30-30, often paired with handloading practices common in the early smokeless era. The 24 inch barrel provides excellent balance and velocity, and the bore remains bright with sharp rifling, showing only light erosion and a couple of minor pits, rating a solid 8 out of 10. Winchester Proof Steel barrel markings and WP proofs are clear and correct, reinforcing the rifle’s originality and proper factory configuration.
Overall condition is very strong for a C&R example, with approximately 90 percent of the original blued finish remaining. The metal surfaces show only light handling wear, scattered fine scratches, and minor corrosion spots, while the markings remain crisp and legible and the screw heads are sharp. The smooth walnut stocks show typical compression dents and light handling marks without cracks or chips and remain well fitted. Mechanically, the action operates smoothly with a crisp trigger and properly functioning lever and half cock safeties, presenting this Model 64 as a well preserved and highly representative example of Winchester’s postwar sporting craftsmanship.
