Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 64 dates to 1950 and represents one of the most refined sporting variants built on the venerable Model 1894 action. Introduced in 1933, the Model 64 was intended as an upscale hunting rifle, blending the proven reliability of the ’94 with more modern stock architecture and improved handling characteristics. The semi beavertail forend, capped pistol grip, and shotgun style buttplate give this rifle a distinctly postwar sporting profile, while still retaining the classic top ejecting Winchester lever action layout that had earned its reputation across North America.
Chambered in .30-30 Winchester, this rifle reflects the cartridge’s continued dominance well into the mid twentieth century as a practical and effective deer round. The 24 inch barrel offers excellent balance and velocity, and the bore remains bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating a strong 9 out of 10. The factory Winchester Proof Steel barrel markings and WP proofs are clear and correct, and the installed Lyman receiver sight provides a period appropriate upgrade that enhances precision while preserving the rifle’s traditional lines.
Condition is very good for a C&R example, with approximately 85 percent of the original blued finish remaining. The receiver and barrel show honest carry wear, particularly near the front of the receiver, along with scattered handling marks consistent with field use rather than neglect. The walnut stocks retain solid structure with expected surface wear and remain well fitted, complemented by a checkered steel buttplate showing only minor edge wear. Mechanically, the action operates smoothly with a crisp trigger and properly functioning safeties, presenting this Model 64 as a well preserved and highly representative example of Winchester’s postwar sporting lever guns.
