Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 64 dates to 1949 production and represents the refined sporting evolution of the Model 1894 action, marketed by Winchester as the “Deluxe Deer Rifle.” Introduced in the late 1930s, the Model 64 was intended to offer a more upscale alternative to the standard Model 94, featuring a slimmer profile, half-length magazine, longer barrel, and higher-grade wood. By the immediate postwar period, the Model 64 had earned a strong following among hunters who valued traditional lever-action handling paired with improved balance and finish.

Chambered in .30 W.C.F., better known as the .30-30 Winchester, the rifle is configured with a 24 inch barrel that favors smooth swing and steady offhand shooting. The cartridge’s long-established reputation for reliability, moderate recoil, and effectiveness on deer-sized game made it a natural fit for the Model 64’s role as a dedicated hunting rifle. The bright bore with sharp rifling and minimal fouling underscores the rifle’s continued mechanical integrity, while the factory hooded front sight and Marble’s-style semi-buckhorn rear sight reflect Winchester’s thoughtful approach to practical field sights during this era.

Overall, this example presents in very good condition, retaining approximately 90 percent of its original blued finish with only light handling wear and a few scattered spots of minor corrosion. The checkered walnut stocks remain attractive and sound, showing modest use without structural issues, and the steel buttplate retains strong definition in its checkering despite light oxidation. Mechanically correct and clearly marked, this Model 64 stands as a well-preserved postwar example of Winchester’s premium lever-action sporting rifle, embodying the balance, finish quality, and field-oriented design that define mid-century production from Winchester Repeating Arms.
