Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 90% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at most edges. There is handling wear on the bottom of the receiver. There is more minor wear on the barrel toward the rear. There are a few light nicks and scratches, mostly on the bottom of the barrel extension. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good-plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly and smoothly. This shotgun will slam-fire as designed. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: This is a vintage post-war Winchester Model 42 standard grade .410 bore pump-action shotgun from 1952. The Model 42 was the first pump shotgun specifically designed for the .410 chambering and resembles its larger cousin the Model 12. The gun is in Very Good-plus condition, showing wear consistent with responsible use in the field over the last 70+ years. It has a lot of original finish remaining with a great bore and strong mechanics. It would make a fine addition to any collection, especially if you have a new generation of shooters to train. Please see our photos and good luck!
