Our Assessment: Introduced in 1933, the Winchester Model 42 occupies a unique place in Winchester’s pump action lineage as the only slide action shotgun designed from the outset specifically for the .410 bore. While it shares visual and mechanical similarities with the larger Model 12, the Model 42 was its own, ground-up design by William Roemer, one of Winchester’s most influential engineers and chief designers. Roemer began development work in the late 1920s, and the resulting Model 42 combined the handling qualities of a full size pump shotgun with the refinement and balance demanded by the diminutive .410 cartridge. Total production numbered approximately 159,353 examples, a modest figure when compared to the millions of Model 12s produced, making early examples increasingly desirable among collectors.

This 1934 C&R example is a takedown Winchester Model 42 chambered for 3 inch .410 shells and fitted with a desirable 28 inch barrel with a fixed Full choke. The bore is bright with no erosion present and rates an excellent 9.5 out of 10. The shotgun retains approximately 95 percent of its original blued finish, with most finish loss concentrated on the magazine tube and some blueing loss visible along the leading edges of the receiver. Markings remain clear and well defined, screw heads are mostly sharp, and Winchester proof marks are present on the barrel and receiver.

The two piece wood stocks consist of a semi pistol grip buttstock with fluted straight comb, an 18 groove pump grip, and a hard rubber Winchester buttplate. The wood shows only minimal scratches and light compression marks, presenting in Fine overall condition. The takedown action functions correctly and separates easily for storage and maintenance, as designed. This early Model 42 represents a high condition example of Winchester’s purpose built .410 pump, combining strong originality, excellent bore condition, and early production appeal in one of the most refined small bore shotguns of the twentieth century.
