Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 60% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows wear throughout all metal surfaces, with the receiver turning to a patina, and the finish thinning on the barrel, and barrel band. The action shows signs of use. The screw heads show signs of tooling, but still have strong and serviceable slots. The pins are unmarred. The markings are clear and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good to Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions as intended, and the safety works correctly. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: 3x magazines- 1 5rd, and 2 10rd magazines.
Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1907 was a revolutionary arm for its time—a robust, semi-automatic rifle chambered in the powerful .351 Winchester Self-Loading cartridge. Designed for both civilian and law enforcement use, it offered an unprecedented combination of firepower and reliability in the early 20th century. This particular example, serial number 8938, was manufactured in 1908—just the second year of production—and is an excellent representation of one of Winchester’s most advanced early designs. The rifle features its original blued finish (with honest wear throughout), a bright bore, and solid mechanics. It’s also accompanied by three rare magazines: one 5-round and two 10-rounders, adding significant value for both collectors and shooters alike.
The .351 WSL cartridge may not be a household name today, but in the early 1900s, it was regarded as cutting-edge—one of the earliest rimless, high-velocity cartridges designed for a civilian semi-auto rifle. The 1907’s blowback design proved reliable under field conditions and was adopted by police departments, prison guards, and even Allied forces in World War I for aviation and security roles. When fitted with a 10-round magazine, as seen here, the 1907 offered impressive capacity and rapid fire, making it a formidable option in its era.
Today, the Winchester 1907 stands as both a collectible and a fascinating shooter for those who appreciate turn-of-the-century firearms ingenuity. While the red rubber buttpad is a later addition, the wood remains intact with honest wear, and the bore is sharp and bright—indicative of a rifle that has been used but cared for. Whether you’re a Winchester aficionado, a collector of early semi-autos, or simply someone who appreciates mechanical history, this 1907 offers rarity, utility, and charisma in equal measure.
