Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1894 is one of the most iconic American sporting rifles, known for its strong and reliable design and association with the American frontier. This particular example, chambered in .32-40 Winchester and manufactured in 1899, qualifies as a Curio & Relic and is a true pre-20th century production piece. The .32-40 cartridge, originally introduced for target shooting, also earned respect in the field as a medium game cartridge, especially when paired with a rifle of this quality.
This rifle features a 26” barrel, a desirable configuration that balances accuracy with historical appeal. The receiver and barrel retain traces of their original blued finish, and the bore, though showing light erosion, still displays well-defined rifling, indicating this piece is still very shootable. The wood furniture has aged gracefully, showing only light handling marks and no major damage, and remains tight to the action.
Collectors and shooters alike will appreciate the mechanical integrity of this rifle. With its crisp lever lockup, clean trigger pull, and Winchester’s time-tested 1894 action, this piece will make a fine addition to any lever-action collection or vintage hunting lineup.
