Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1892 is one of John Moses Browning’s most enduring lever action designs, created as a compact and refined successor to the Model 1873. Stronger, smoother, and better suited to smaller high velocity cartridges, the Model 1892 quickly became a favorite among hunters, ranchers, and outdoorsmen in the early twentieth century. By 1924, production quality and mechanical refinement were at their peak, and takedown examples such as this one offered the added practicality of easy transport and cleaning without sacrificing strength or accuracy.
Chambered in .25-20 Winchester Center Fire, this rifle reflects a cartridge developed in the early 1890s for small game and varmint hunting, prized for its mild recoil, flat shooting characteristics, and efficiency. The 24 inch octagon barrel provides excellent balance and velocity, while the full length tubular magazine and smooth lever action deliver the handling qualities that made the Model 1892 so popular in the field. The presence of a Lyman tang sight further reinforces this rifle’s period sporting configuration, offering a refined sighting option favored by careful shooters of the era.
This example retains approximately 65 percent of its original blued finish, with expected thinning at the muzzle and honest carry wear to the receiver and lever from field use. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and light erosion present, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut stocks show scattered scratches, compressions, and oil darkening around the receiver, presenting in Good condition with a measured length of pull of 12 7/8 inches. Markings remain clear and legible, screws are sharp, and pins are unmarred. Overall, this Winchester Model 1892 takedown stands as a well preserved and mechanically sound example of a classic American sporting rifle from the golden age of lever actions.
