Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a folding adjustable square notch. There is a Lyman tang peep sight installed.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock set for this rifle is a two piece smooth walnut, capped forend, straight grip, straight comb, and rifle style crescent buttplate. The stocks have been refinished. There are scratches, handling marks, and compression dents throughout. There are a couple patched dents on the right side of the buttstock. There is some oil darkening at the wrist. Overall these stocks rate in Good Plus condition for a refinish.

Bore Condition: This rifle has been rebored to a 45 Colt from the original 38-40 WCF. The bore is bright with defined rifling. There is no erosion throughout the bore. There is scattered fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. There are scratches, nicks, and some very light corrosion freckles. There is thinning bluing on leading edges, especially near the loading gate. There are some softened edges from polishing. The screw heads are lightly tool marked with usable slots. The markings are faint to obscured from polish. Overall, this rifle is in Good Plus condition for a refinish.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Manufactured in 1902, this Winchester Model 1892 Rifle reflects the mature production period of one of John Browning’s most successful lever action designs. The Model 92 was built to handle popular pistol cartridges of the era in a strong yet trim action, and it quickly earned a reputation for smooth cycling and durability in the field. This example features a 24 inch octagonal barrel measuring 24 1/4 inches, fitted with a dovetailed blade front sight, folding adjustable rear sight, and a Lyman tang peep sight that enhances practical accuracy. Originally chambered in .38-40 WCF and now rebored to .45 Colt, the rifle pairs a classic Winchester platform with a cartridge introduced in 1873 and long associated with frontier sidearms and companion rifles.
The metal surfaces retain approximately 85 percent of their refinish blued appearance, showing scratches, nicks, light corrosion freckling, and thinning along leading edges, particularly around the loading gate. Edges and markings have been softened from prior polishing, and while the screw heads show light tool marks, their slots remain serviceable. The two piece smooth walnut stock set with capped forend, straight grip, straight comb, and rifle style crescent buttplate has also been refinished. The wood exhibits scattered handling marks, compression dents, a couple of patched dents on the right side of the buttstock, and some oil darkening at the wrist. Overall, the stocks rate Good Plus for a refinish and remain structurally sound.
The rebored .45 Colt bore is bright with defined rifling and no erosion, rating 8.5 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, with only scattered fouling noted. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, the hammer retains its half cock safety position, and the trigger is crisp. While refinished and altered from its original chambering, this 1902 Winchester Model 1892 retains the unmistakable handling qualities and mechanical character that have made the 92 a lasting favorite among lever action enthusiasts.
