Bore Condition: The bore is dark gray. The rifling is worn, but visible. There is light-moderate erosion scattered through the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 4 or 5 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its current metal finish. There are scattered areas with a mottled appearance from thinning and minor wear. The barrel’s finish has a plum hue. There are some scattered light nicks and scratches, spots of minor surface oxidation, and a few spots of minor erosion. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Good-plus condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 1892 Rifle made in 1914 and chambered in .25-20 Winchester. This rifle is in Good-plus condition as refinished, looking pretty good for its age. This vintage rifle has seen nearly all of the 20th Century and will still make a nice addition to a collection in the 21st. The .25-20 is still a very viable small game, fur bearing, and trapping cartridge. This 1892 rifle will make a great addition to a Winchester collection missing an 1892 and may also be a good candidate for restoration. Please see our photos and good luck!
