Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “NICKEL STEEL”, “MADE IN U.S.A./ –WINCHESTER– / TRADE MARK”, “MODEL 12-16 GA. FULL”. The right side of the barrel is marked “MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. PAT. JULY 21, 1896. / FEB. 22 JUNE 14. 1898. SEPT. 7. 1909. MAY 17. 14. 31. JUNE 7. 14. 28. JULY 5. 12. 1910. JULY 22. 1913.”. The bottom of the receiver and receiver extension are marked with the serial number. The bottom of the receiver extension and magazine tube slide are marked with indexing arrows. The top of the receiver and barrel are both marked with a proof mark, the barrel’s to the left of the rib.

Sights / Optics: There is a silver-colored bead fixed to the front of the rib. The tops of the rib and receiver are serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with grooved slide handle, semi-pistol grip, straight comb, and checkered black hard rubber Winchester buttplate. The stocks have some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches, more in the buttstock than the slide handle. There is a thin crack in the bottom-left of the wrist at the front edge. There are no chips. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has minor wear around the edges, with sharp checkering and lettering. Overall, the stocks rate in about Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some stubborn fouling toward the muzzle-end.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 90% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at some edges. Most of the balance is in operational wear and a few patches of minor surface oxidation, most notable on the bottom-front of the barrel extension. There is light wear at the left-front edge of the receiver from the action bar during assembly. There are a few other minor marks. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good-Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This shotgun will slam-fire as designed. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Model 1912 (shortened to Model 12 in 1919) was the next step from the Winchester Model 1897 hammer-fired shotgun, which in turn had evolved from the earlier Winchester Model 1893 shotgun. With forged and machined steel parts, the ultimate reason for discontinuation of the Model 12 in 1964 was that it was too expensive to produce at a competitive price. The primary competition at this time came from the much less expensive Remington Model 870, which had been introduced in 1950. This example is a 16 gauge made in 1927. It has a 28″ Full choke barrel with a solid rib. The bore is bright and the mechanics are strong. The gun retains about 90% of its blued finish with honest wear from light use in the field. This would make a nice addition to a Winchester collection, but you could also take it out in the field or to the range without worrying about keeping it as a safe queen.
