Markings: Barrel left shoulder marked “MADE IN NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA / —WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL—”, “—WINCHESTER— / —TRADE MARK—”, “—MODEL 12-12 GA.-2 ¾ CHAM.”, and “FULL”. Rear of the magazine tube and underside of the receiver are marked with the serial number, “1216758”.

Sights/Optics: There is a white bead fixed to the front of the rib. There is a discolored bid. The tops of the rib and receiver are serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stocks are replacement two-piece wood with grooved slide handle, semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and a Pachmayr ventilated brown rubber recoil pad. The stocks have some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches, more in the buttstock than on the forend. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 12 1/4” and 13 1/4” from the trigger to the back of the wood and recoil pad, respectively. The pad suffers from a bit of discoloration and edge wear. Overall, the stocks rate in Very Good condition, as not original to the gun.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright. There are a few scant spots of minor stubborn fouling about mid way.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 84% of its metal finish. The action has light operational wear and the magazine tube has largely worn to white. There is minor thinning on all edges of the vent rib. The barrel has a few scattered nicks and minor scuffs. The receiver has a few minor nicks. Both the receiver and the receiver have scattered minor nicks and scuffs; some of the nicks are distinctly through the finish. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This shotgun will slam-fire as designed. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Model 1912 (shortened to Model 12 in 1919) was the next step from the Winchester Model 1897 hammer-fired shotgun, which in turn had evolved from the earlier Winchester Model 1893 shotgun. With forged and machined steel parts, the ultimate reason for discontinuation of the Model 12 in 1964 was that it was simply too expensive to produce at a competitive price. When the money talks, the people listen. The primary competition at this time came from the much less expensive Remington Model 870, which had been introduced in 1950. This example is a 12 gauge made in 1949. It has a 30” Full choke barrel. The bore is in good shape and the mechanics are strong. This shotgun will slam-fire ‘til the cows come home. The gun retains about 84% of its blued finish with honest wear from consistent use in the field. This would make a nice addition to a Winchester collection, but you could also take it out in the field or to the range without worrying about keeping it as a safe queen. Good luck and happy bidding!
