Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 100 in .284 Winchester is a semi-automatic rifle produced by Winchester Repeating Arms from 1961 to 1973. Designed as a modern sporting rifle, it was intended for hunters who preferred the rapid follow-up shots of a semi-auto while maintaining the power of a traditional hunting cartridge. The rifle features an 18-inch barrel, a removable 4-round box magazine, and a gas-operated action that provides smooth cycling and reduced felt recoil. It is equipped with open sights, including a hooded front sight and an adjustable rear sight, while also being drilled and tapped for scope mounts.

The .284 Winchester cartridge, introduced in 1963, was ahead of its time, offering ballistics similar to a .270 Winchester but in a short-action format. This made the Model 100 in .284 Win a rare and sought-after configuration, as most rifles were chambered in .308 Winchester or .243 Winchester. While the Model 100 gained popularity for its sleek design and reliable performance, it was eventually discontinued due to evolving market trends. Today, collectors and hunters alike seek out the Model 100 in .284 Win, as it represents one of the few semi-automatic rifles chambered in this innovative but underappreciated cartridge. The metal retains approximately 85% of its original blued finish, and the balance of the metal surfaces show light to moderate corrosion and pitting, including corrosion visible inside the receiver. The one-piece walnut stock fits the action tightly, displays only light handling wear, and rates Very Good overall. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 10/10 to the writer’s inspection. The semi-automatic action and cross-bolt safety function properly at the time of inspection. A single 4-round detachable magazine marked “284” is included and rates in Good condition. This carbine will suit a collector or shooter who values a classic Winchester semi-automatics, or for the hunter who wants a maneuverable semi-auto carbine, chambered in a short action cartridge that punches above its weight class.
