Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1886 Extra Light Rifle, manufactured by Miroku in Japan, is a modern rendition of one of John Browning’s most robust lever-action designs. Chambered in the powerful .45-70 Government, this model features a 22” round barrel and a slimmer, more maneuverable profile than the original heavy-frame 1886 rifles, making it ideal for field use while maintaining traditional aesthetics. The rifle is fitted with a straight grip walnut stock and a classic blued finish, often accompanied by a crescent buttplate and traditional iron sights. The build quality from Miroku is outstanding, with tight tolerances, smooth lever cycling, and attention to craftsmanship that’s on par with premium American classics.

This “Extra Light” variant maintains the historic look and feel of the original Winchester 1886 while reducing carry weight, making it a practical choice for hunters or enthusiasts who want the stopping power of .45-70 in a more mobile platform. It’s especially valued among lever-gun aficionados for blending classic styling with modern metallurgy and reliability. Whether used for hunting large game or as a collectible nod to frontier-era firearms, the Miroku-built 1886 Extra Light offers a balance of rugged utility and historical reverence that sets it apart in the world of modern lever-action rifles.
