Action Type: Semi Auto, Detachable Magazine

Markings: There is no import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. .30 M1” on the front and “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK / 5786146” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “W” and with a Winchester “PW in an oval” proof mark. This is a correctly marked Winchster barrel (page 49-50 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The right side of the barrel is marked with a “flaming bomb” just above the gas piston. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 78) and the bottom is marked “J”. The hammer is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 89-90). The magazine release is marked “M” and “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 100-101). The smooth push button safety is marked “ “EW” ” which is a Winchester mark (pages 95). The inside of the operating slide is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 65). The right bolt lug is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 36). The front sight is unmarked which is consistent with Winchester and others (page 56). The Type III rear sight is marked “H in a shield” which is a Winchester mark (page 29). The Type III barrel band is marked “C” which is a Winchester mark (page 59). The inside of the handguard is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 138). The sling well is unmarked which is consistent with Winchester (page 108 – 109). The right side of the butt is marked with a Winchester cartouche “W.R.A / G.H.D.” next to a “crossed cannons” cartouche which are Winchester marks (page 123). The top of the recoil plate is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 135). The rear of the magazine is marked “IA” which is an Inland mark (page 142 -143).

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type III adjustable aperture assembly.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has an attractive pattern to it. The stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows small scratches and discoloration from oxidation. The wood shows scrapes and scratches which have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ? inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright; semi bright near the muzzle. The rifling is sharp. There is fouling and oxidation near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some.The bore shows an M.E. of 0.9.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish as refinished. The left side of the receiver has surface erosion showing through the new finish below the wood line. This area also shows discoloration. The metal shows scuffs, light scrapes, and handling marks. The right side of the receiver and the bolt show light thinning consistent with cycling. The markings are well defined.  Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle has an unmarked green canvas sling attached. It shows light discoloration on the canvas as well as scrapes & oxidation on the metal. It is in about Very Good Plus condition. The rifle comes with a 15 round magazine. It shows several small scrapes & light scratches as well as areas of oxidation. It is in about Very Good condition.
The 15 round magazine is not available to residents of California or any other state with magazine capacity restrictions.

Our Assessment: This Winchester M1 Carbine was made back in 1945. It is a “matching” rifle that uses all Winchester marked parts. The magazine was made by a different company but can easily be replaced with a Winchester magazine. The wood has an attractive pattern to it and the metal has been refinished nicely, keeping the Winchester marks intact. This is a Nice Winchester M1 Carbine to add to your collection.
