Markings: There is no import mark. The top front of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. .30 M1” and the top rear is marked “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK (faded small text) / 1300063”. The top of the barrel is marked “W” and with a Winchester “PW in an oval” proof mark . This is a correctly marked Winchester barrel (page 49 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The right side of the barrel is marked with a partial “flaming bomb” just above the gas piston. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 78) and the bottom is marked “85”. The hammer is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 89-90). The magazine release is marked “W” on the side. This is actually a partial “WA / M” stamping which is a post WWII rebuild mark (page 98-101 & 184). The smooth push button safety is marked “ “EW” ” which is a Winchester mark (pages 95). The inside of the operating slide is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 65). The right lug of the bolt is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 36). The front sight is unmarked which is consistent with Winchester and several other manufacturers (page 56). The Type I rear sight is marked “S” is consistent with Wincheaster and a few other manufacturers (page 29). The Type IA barrel band is unmarked which was used by Winchester and other manufacturers (page 59). The inside of the handguard is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 138). The top of the recoil plate is marked “W” (double stamped) which is a Winchester mark (page 135). The recoil plate screw is marked “x” which is a Winchester mark (page 133). The right side of the butt is marked “W.R.A. / G.H.D” and with an ordnance Department “crossed cannons” cartouche. These are Winchester marks (page 120). The rear of the magazine in the rifle is marked “IW” which is a Winchester mark (page 142 – 143). The two paper wrapped magazines in the magazine pouch are each marked “BW” which are also Winchester marks. We opened the paper just enough to view the marks.
The front of the magazine pouch is marked “U.S.” and the rear is marked “BOYT / -43-”. The sling buckle is marked “circled W” and “USA”. This is a post WWII mark from the Waterbury Buckle Company.

Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a Type I, flip up dual aperture assembly.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a pistol grip, Type IA barrel band with sling loop, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows scratches, a few small dents, discoloration, and some surface erosion. The barrel band shows scrapes & thinning on the loop.  The wood shows several scrapes & scratches. Some of the marks have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. The area near the muzzle is light grey. There is frosting and a freckling of light erosion near the muzzle. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The left side of the receiver has some pin prick surface erosion showing through the new finish. The trigger group shows areas of light thinning as well as scrapes along the bottom. The front sight and top of the receiver show light scrapes. The right side of the receiver shows some thinning consistent with cycling. Most of the markings are deep. The small “TRADEMARK” stamping on the receiver is heavily faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a green canvas sling, green canvas dual magazine pouch, and 3 magazines. The sling shows light marks and is in about Fine Plus condition. The dual magazine pouch shows light discoloration and is in about Fine condition.
The magazine in the rifle shows scrapes from insertion and removal. It is in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition. The other 2 magazines are still in their long term storage paper. We opened the paper to view the markings. They are in about Excellent condition.
The 15 round magazines are not available to residents of California or any other state with magazine capacity restrictions.

Our Assessment: This Winchester M1 Carbine was made back in 1943. It is in nice shape for a WWII service rifle. This M1 Carbine is 1 part short of being “All Matching”. The non-matching part is marked “W” but is not a Winchester part. The rifle comes with 3 Winchester magazines, a dual mag pouch, and a sling. This is a nice M1 Carbine package to add to your Winchester or WWII collection.
