Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top front of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. .30 M1” and the top rear is marked “Winchester / Trade Mark / 1197229”. The top of the barrel is marked “W” and with a Winchester “PW in an oval” proof mark. This is a correctly marked Winchester barrel (page 49 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The right side of the barrel is marked with a “flaming bomb” just above the gas piston. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 78). It is also stamped with an “R”. The hammer is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (pages 89-90). The magazine release is marked “M” and “WI”which is an Inland mark (page 100). The smooth push button safety is unmarked which is consistent with Winchester and others (pages 95 & 104). The inside of the operating slide is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 65). The bolt is marked “W” on the right lug which is a Winchester mark (page 36). The front sight is unmarked which is consistent with Winchester and other manufacturers (page 56). The Type II rear sight is marked “PI” which was used by Inland & Saginaw Gear (page 29). The Type IA barrel band is unmarked which is consistent with Winchester and others (page 59). The recoil plate is marked “W” which is a Winchester mark (page 135). The stock and handguard are unmarked. The rear of the magazine is marked “IA” which is an Inland mark (page 142-143).
Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is an adjustable Type II aperture assembly.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a pistol grip, barrel band with sling loop, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The edge of the buttplate shows thinning, pin prick surface erosion, and a few small dents. The wood shows a few scrapes & scratches. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.
Type of Finish: Matte Blue
Finish Originality: Refinished
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. The grooves near the muzzle are grey. The rifling is sharp. There is fouling and erosion in the grooves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up a bit. The bore shows an M.E. of 2.2.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 93% of its metal finish as refinished. Scratches and some pin prick surface erosion show through the new finish.The barrel also has oxidation showing through the finish. The sides of the receiver & sides of the trigger group show scrapes & thinning below the wood. The right side of the receiver and the bolt show thinning consistent with cycling. The metal shows various scrapes & handling marks. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a 15 round magazine and green canvas sling. The magazine shows scrapes, small scratches, and light surface erosion. It is in about Good condition. The unmarked new production sling is in about Excellent condition.
