Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER MODEL 9422 .22 L-L.R. / MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN., U.S.A. – WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL”. The right side of the barrel is marked “- WINCHESTER – / TRADEMARKS LICENSED FROM OLIN CORP.”, and “Model 9422 High Grade Tribute – One of 9422”. The bottom of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The left side of the receiver is marked “MODEL 9422 / TRIBUTE”, in banner, along with factory engraving. The right side of the receiver is factory scroll engraved along with the Winchester horse & cowboy.
Barrel Length: 20″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded beaded blade, dovetailed to a serrated ramp, screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is a semi-buckhorn U-notch sight, on a riser, dovetailed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is grooved for optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece, checkered, high-grade walnut stock set, with a straight grip, straight comb, checkered plastic Winchester buttplate, and a banded checkered forend. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks show light handling and storage wear, with a few minor dings and hairline scratches throughout. The checkering is well defined. The stock’s finish is intact and the wood grain is vivid and attractive. The stocks fit tightly to the frame, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling and storage wear, with some minor corrosion on the screw head in the left side of the receiver, and some light operational wear on the bolt/action. Otherwise, the bluing is deep and dark throughout. The markings and engravings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the half-cock safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with its original serial number matching box, and owner’s manual/paperwork.
Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 9422 High Grade Tribute was produced in 2005 as a commemorative edition honoring one of Winchester’s most respected modern rimfire lever actions. Limited to a total production of 9,422 rifles, this Tribute model combines the proven mechanical design of the 9422 with elevated cosmetic treatment, including factory engraving and select walnut stocks. Manufactured in New Haven during the final years of U.S. Winchester production, these rifles represent the closing chapter of an era that collectors increasingly view as historically significant.
Chambered for .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle, the 9422 has long been admired for its smooth cycling, excellent balance, and exceptional build quality relative to other rimfire lever guns of its time. The 20-inch barrel, traditional iron sights, and grooved receiver reflect Winchester’s intent to preserve classic handling characteristics while maintaining compatibility with period-correct optics. The High Grade Tribute embellishments, including engraved receiver panels and figured walnut, elevate the rifle beyond standard production while remaining faithful to the traditional Winchester aesthetic.
This example presents in very good to fine overall condition, retaining the vast majority of its original blued finish with only light handling and storage evidence visible. The bore is bright and sharply rifled, the engraving remains crisp, and the wood shows attractive grain with minor cosmetic wear consistent with careful ownership. Accompanied by its original box and paperwork, this Winchester 9422 High Grade Tribute stands as a well-preserved commemorative rimfire rifle from the final New Haven era.
